Explorers and researchers have found the wreck of one of the largest historic ships 107 years after it sank, which is still intact a century later.

The Falkland Maritime Heritage Trust has announced that a team of researchers has discovered the wreck of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's "Endurance" ship, 4 miles south of the ship's last recorded location in the Antarctic Weddell Sea, using sub-surface drones. Last week, the exciting discovery by the Endurance22 Expedition puts an end to a century-old marine mystery, according to a BBC report.

The ship sank on its expedition in 1915, after the ice trapped it for 10 months, and the crew was waiting for it to melt, but with the advent of spring the pressure of the moving ice began to damage the wooden frame of the ship, and in October the ship was flooded in a way that it was not allowed to sail again, and it was lost All hopes are on the return trip, forcing Shackleton and his men to escape on foot and in small boats.

The wreck appears in good condition as if the ship had sunk yesterday, even though it has been 3 km above the water's surface for more than a century. John Shears, the expedition leader, described the moment the cameras landed on the ship's name as "amazing", adding: "The discovery of the wreck is an incredible achievement."

"Without any exaggeration, this is the best wooden shipwreck I've ever seen," said Minson Pound, a marine archaeologist who was on the expedition team and has now achieved the biggest ambition of his nearly 50-year career.

Scientists used submarines to take pictures and videos of the shipwreck, which has been protected as a historic site and will remain undisturbed, the New York Times reported.
